We recently made a trip to the Hatfield McCoy (HMT) and Spearhead trail systems. We’ve ridden HMT before, but Spearhead was new to us this time. We stayed at Busted ATV Resort Main Lodge along Route 52 in Bramwell, WV. The ride down to the Original Pocahontas Trailhead was easy. We picked up our trail passes at Pocahontas ATV Resort on our way. The folks there were very friendly and offered tips for the trail. They made it clear that the color coding would not be equivalent to the HMT colors; they were right. Greens on Original Pocahontas were equivalent to HMT blues and blues to blacks. We ran almost all of the trails, from green to black, and loved it. We put in 46 miles, hitting a bit more than 3/4 of the trails.
They’ve added a few new trails that I’ll be working into my Avenza and Maprika 5-in-1 map in the near future. One new addition was trail 100, which everyone recommend we try. 100 is a black with some great climbs to the top of the mountain. While the trails were still relatively easy with our Rzrs and Wildcat X, I could see how they’d present a challenge for sport quads and bikes. Our ride was just after a good amount of rain, so the trails were slick. It’s safe to say that 100 was one of the highlights of our ride. Trail 61 on the Boissevain side was a nice open dirt road that we could rip on. We took a couple high speed runs on this one, which was a nice change of pace since most of the riding on the trails is technical and slower; we like to keep a quicker pace, but like the technical stuff too.
We made a stop in Boissevain at what used to be the Crazy Horse gas station and convenience story; it’s now the Trailhead Resort Company Store. It was a good stop for some pizza and drinks.
The group agreed this was a really fun trail with some challenges that we haven’t seen on the HMT trails. So, if you’re staying within range of Pocahontas, VA, we suggest you spend one of your days there.
